04 / HOW IT WORKS

Signals, with context.

Know what you are looking at.

What does Shield actually measure?

Shield collects public observations and evaluates transparent rules. Company free cash flow, volatility, funding stress and Treasury yields measure different things. They are not combined into a predictive risk score. A Treasury yield is not a direct liquidity measure; the direct Treasury liquidity feed is currently unavailable.

What do the colors mean?

Green: no applicable rule triggered. Amber: a watch rule triggered. Red: an alert rule triggered. Gray: missing, stale or non-comparable data, or no rule set. Default VIX thresholds are 20 and 30. A quarterly FCF decline of 20% triggers Watch; 40% or negative FCF triggers Alert. These are product heuristics, not official risk classifications. Price proximity uses a 2% watch band around your own threshold.

How is quarterly free cash flow calculated?

Operating cash flow minus capital expenditure, in USD. When a filing supplies fiscal year-to-date cash flows, the preceding cumulative period is subtracted to obtain one quarter. The displayed date is the SEC filing date, which can differ from the earnings-release date. QoQ is shown only when the preceding quarter has positive FCF; otherwise it is N/M. This definition can differ from management-adjusted FCF. Future earnings dates are not inferred.

Is the data live? Where does it come from?

Each observation shows its own source and as-of date. Cboe VIX is a daily close; the 3-month Treasury constant-maturity yield comes from Federal Reserve H.15 via FRED; OFR funding stress has a two-business-day publication lag and is a broad funding proxy. Gold and silver spot quotes come from Gold API and update and are checked about every 30 seconds; quotes older than two minutes are marked stale, which can include closed-market periods. The view checks the cache every five seconds by default. Source timestamps and view-check times are separate. Global index and futures snapshots are checked about every minute, selected equity quotes every five minutes, and the SEC company-disclosure feed every five minutes. The cash-flow calculation pool and other daily risk feeds are checked every six hours. U.S. stock prices require a connected provider and can be delayed. Daily observations older than five calendar days are marked stale. This is not a real-time trading service.

How do alerts and acknowledgements work?

Guest watchlists stay in your browser. Sign in to save watchlists across devices. The console evaluates rules on each view refresh. An acknowledgement marks an alert as reviewed; it never clears its underlying condition. A new alert appears when a rule changes severity, clears and triggers again, or a new financial filing meets the rule. History records when this browser first observed a condition, not when a market event originally happened. Alert review state and history are device-local, with up to 200 resolved episodes retained. Signed-in review actions are also recorded in your private account audit, together with a server snapshot hash and rule version. In-page warnings work while this console is open; optional sound must be enabled by you. No email is sent.

Do you give investment advice or handle trades?

No. Shield is a data visualization tool. It does not recommend securities, predict returns, provide buy or sell instructions, execute trades or connect to a broker.

What data is stored?

Accounts store an email address, a salted password hash, a hashed session token and the watchlist you choose to save. Guest lists are stored locally. Account sign-in, saved rule revisions and review actions are recorded in a private server audit. Review records include public observation snapshots; passwords and session secrets are excluded. The local hash chain is not an independent or immutable audit service. No Shield advertising trackers are included. Global prices are fetched on the server from public source snapshots. External source links open the original provider website. Password reset is not available in this MVP; keep your password securely.
