Compare quarterly financial results without mixing periods

Maintained by 蓝星工作室 (Lanxing Studio) · Updated

Before reading a percentage change, check that both numbers describe the same kind of result. A correctly copied number can still produce a misleading comparison.

A quarter is different from a cumulative period

A statement can show one quarter, six months or nine months. For example, a hypothetical nine-month operating cash flow of 90 and six-month cash flow of 65 imply 25 for the third quarter, if both cumulative figures use the same basis. Comparing 90 directly with a single quarter of 20 would answer a different question.

Match the unit and definition

Know which comparison is displayed

YoY compares a period with its prior-year counterpart. QoQ compares consecutive quarters. Shield’s company-update comparisons require matched concepts, currency and comparable periods. Its separate free-cash-flow alert uses a quarterly calculation. Read the label and original source for the particular card rather than treating every change as QoQ.

Why a percentage may be unavailable

Shield withholds a percentage when the base or periods do not support its comparison rules. A hypothetical change from a loss of 10 to a loss of 5 narrows the loss, but an ordinary growth percentage can be confusing with a non-positive base. Read the two reported values and the explanation instead of interpreting an empty percentage as zero change.

A repeatable check

Search a company, open Financials and follow the original filing link beside the measure. Write down the two periods, values and units. Recalculate only after they match. If the panel has not finished loading, return after its source check; incomplete retrieval is different from a company reporting no result.
